The Goodness of God’s Plan for Relationship

“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Genesis 2:18

But wait, there’s more! God has created a beautiful environment. He formed Adam from the dust of the ground, breathing life into him.  He then placed the responsibility upon Adam to work and keep the garden.  Can you imagine what that must have been like?  Adam is witness to God’s glory and creation on full display.  The colors, sounds, smells, sensations, and everywhere you look is like the most beautiful sunrise that just stays in place- perpetually stunning.  Then, as if just being present in God’s glory in such a place wasn’t enough, Adam was handed the keys to the garden.  How can anything about what has taken place in this Genesis account of creation so far not be good?  But wait, there’s more!

God says“It is not good…” Remember in Genesis chapter one when we read the phrase“God said”?  It was there we were given a glimpse that the God of the Bible is trinitarian, existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. A divine relationship where our One God exists in three distinct persons. God’s creation of man in His image and likeness had to be created in relationship, just as God exists in relationship. Not only does God tell Adam that it’s not good that he is alone, but God also says that He will make a helper fit for him.  We can only speculate on what Adam’s response would have been. Either Adam was thinking, “What could be better than what i’m already experiencing?” or “Everything God creates is astounding, I can’t wait to see this next creation!”

But wait, there’s more!  God wasn’t done. His creation up to this point was perfect, but intentionally incomplete. God wanted Adam to know that there was more. Seminary professor Kenneth Matthews writes, “Whether the man felt his aloneness at first is not stated; only the divine viewpoint is given. God has created human life to have fellowship with him but also to be a social entity, building relationships with other human beings. [Man] will not live until he loves, giving himself away to another on his own level. Isolation is not the divine norm for human beings; community is the creation of God.”

Do you feel as though things are “not good” in your relationships right now?  God has promised that He who began a good work in you will continue it to completion. (Phil 1:6) We can trust that if we obey His word, His commands, and submit to His plan in our lives, He will be faithful to complete the good work in our lives. Oneness in our relationship with God and by FAITH unity in our relationship with others is most definitely good!

Now may the God of peace [the source of serenity and spiritual well-being] who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood that sealed and ratified the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with every good thing to carry out His will and strengthen you [making you complete and perfect as you ought to be], accomplishing in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21(Amplified)
