A Call to Spiritual Warfare
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:7-8
Circa 2005, Tammy and I headed to Jamaica on a youth mission trip. Our first worship service was a spirit-filled and animated time of praise that introduced us to a song we still remind each other of from time to time. The first verse says, “Higher, higher… higher, higher, higher, higher, higher, higher, higher, higher- lift Jesus higher!” The next verse says, “Lower, lower… lower, lower, lower, lower, lower, lower, lower, lower- stomp Satan lower!” The last verse says, “Supa, supa… supa, supa, supa, supa- supa, supa, supa- supa-natural power!”
This simple song communicates a profound truth about living out our walk of FAITH with the Lord. We should strive to lift Jesus higher in our daily lives, actively rebuke the works of the enemy, and walk in the supernatural authority the Lord has given us. By doing so, we align ourselves with God’s purpose and power, enabling us to overcome spiritual battles, grow stronger in our FAITH, and experience peace in our relationships.
Each day brings new challenges, trials, and realities that make it easy to forget or minimize these important practices in the Christian life. It’s why James in his letter to the twelve tribes points it out. Submit to the Lord. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
1. Lift Jesus higher through a heart of gratitude thanking Him for his mercy and goodness.
2. Rebuke the attack and works of the enemy.
3. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might!” Eph 6:10
Prayer
Lord, help us praise and lift You higher in every aspect of our lives. Give us the ability to recognize and reject Satan’s lies, and empower us with Your supernatural strength. Protect our marriage and help us to stand firm in Your truth. Amen.
