“…that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.” – Ephesians 5:26-28
Have you experienced a season in your marriage where the realities of life have made marriage feel more like a drudgery? Where the excitement and joy you once felt seems to have faded beneath the weight of daily routines, challenges, and responsibilities? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but God didn’t design marriage for us to just survive. His desire is for it to thrive and be a source of refreshment, even in the midst of life’s challenges.
When we think of Ephesians 5, we often focus on the command for husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the Church. This is a profound calling, emphasizing sacrificial love. But there’s another part of this passage that’s often overlooked: the call for husbands to sanctify their wives. What does that look like, and how can it transform the way we relate to one another in marriage?
To sanctify means to set apart for a holy purpose, to nurture spiritual growth, and to encourage your spouse to become more like Christ. Paul uses the imagery of cleansing through water to illustrate how Christ sanctifies the Church. Just as water refreshes and revitalizes, a husband’s love should refresh and renew his wife. But how does this happen? By the “washing of water with the word.”
This means that the Word of God should be an active presence in our marriages. Husbands are called to be a source of spiritual nourishment, encouraging their wives and leading them into a deeper relationship with Christ. As God’s Word washes over our hearts, it brings refreshment, clarity, and transformation.
So, how is your relationship with God’s Word? The Word of God is living, active, and able to transform our hearts and minds, equipping us to be that source of refreshment the Lord calls us to be in marriage.
Let your love breathe life, and allow the Word of God to wash over your marriage, making it a reflection of Christ and His Church—holy and without blemish.
