An Invitation to Walk With God—Together

“Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:1

The life of a believer has contemplative moments but is truly characterized by action. Scripture often echoes the believer’s relationship with the Lord as walking with Him.

Genesis 5:24 – “Enoch walked with God…”

Micah 6:8 – “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Galatians 5:25 – “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

2 Corinthians 5:7 – “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Tammy and I enjoy walking together, especially when we get the opportunity to explore a new place or city. New cities definitely provide additional motivation with many savory treats to enjoy. It’s hard to pass up the coffee scene in Seattle, a bagel in New York, a Philly cheesesteak in Philadelphia, or my personal favorite—everything Miami has to offer with its Cuban pastries.

The destination adds purpose and direction to our walk. We’ve easily logged eight to ten miles at times. Along the way, we laugh; at times, we are quiet; we pray; and yes, there are times we disagree and have conflict.

Walking together, whether in a city or in marriage, is a journey filled with moments of elation and moments we’d rather not have to endure. The same is true in our walk with the Lord. We experience deep connection, quiet reflection, and, at times, trials that God uses to glorify Himself and make us more like Jesus.

I’m about the destination (can you tell?), while Tammy is about the journey. Needless to say, we both have to compromise along the way and be committed to unity. However, whether it’s about the journey or the destination, I’m most grateful I don’t walk alone. I get to walk with someone who has chosen to walk with me.

God desires to walk with us! He invites us to taste and see that He is good—an invitation to keep in step with Him and trust Him along the way.

May the Lord bless your walk with Him today, and may you experience the joys of the journey while we anticipate the glorious destination that will make it worth it all.
