The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45
Have you taken time to consider Jesus’ words in this passage? “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” In marriage, our words often expose what our hearts are carrying.
Our words reveal more than we care to admit. This truth isn’t meant to be discouraging, but rather encourages us to examine our heart. It serves as a reminder that healthy words flow from a healthy heart. When our hearts are filled with gratitude, humility, grace, love, and forgiveness those qualities naturally begin to influence the way we speak to our spouse.
I can remember times in our marriage where outwardly things seemed ok. However, when conflict arose the words we spoke revealed a heart that was more calloused than tender. There was more beneath the surface that needed to be examined.
The beautiful promise of the gospel is that God is willing to transform our hearts and renew our minds. As we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, He begins to change what we store in the depths of our hearts.
Tammy and I encourage you to take time as a couple and allow God’s Holy Spirit to bring to light what may be hidden beneath the surface. As He does, invite Him to soften your heart and renew your mind so that your words begin to reflect His love, His grace, His gentleness, His patience, and His forgiveness.
A marriage filled with life-giving words does not happen by accident. It grows out of two hearts that are being renewed by Christ day by day.
