“If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.” Psalm 66:18-19
“Persevering in Prayer”
I heard this phrase the other day, “Persevering in prayer,” and was immediately both convicted and inspired.
Convicted, because so often my prayer life seems to lack life, power, and perseverance.
Inspired, because Scripture commands us to pray, teaching us that prayer is how we communicate with our Heavenly Father. James reminds us: “The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).
Convicted again when I consider James’ words: “a righteous man.” Prayer that avails much flows from a life aligned with God. This means we take time to examine our hearts, confess our sins, and trust that God is faithful and just to forgive us. While the power of prayer doesn’t rest on our own righteousness, it does depend on our willingness to walk in right relationship with Him.
Inspired again, as I remember that we can approach the throne of God boldly, receiving grace and mercy in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
So, pray fervently today. Know that God hears you, and He is more than able to accomplish what concerns you. Pray with your spouse and cultivate spiritual intimacy that strengthens your marriage and brings comfort to one another. When we pray, we fight for our marriages with heaven’s strength.
