How a generous heart can bless your marriage

“It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever.”
  — Psalm 112:5-6

Few things can bless your spouse more than your desire to be extravagantly generous with them. Generosity in marriage isn’t just the tangible gifts we give, but it’s also about the way we give of ourselves.

  • Generous with your time – Communicates, “You are a priority.”
  • Generous with your emotions – Says, “I feel safe with you.”
  • Generous with thoughtful gifts – Demonstrates, “I delight in seeing you happy.”
  • Generous with your words – Speaks life and encouragement, reminding your spouse of their worth.
  • Generous with grace – Extends forgiveness, patience, and understanding, even when it’s undeserved.

Spurgeon, speaking on Psalm 112, says it “…speaks of the reflection of the divine brightness in men born from above.” When we consider God’s generosity and kindness toward us, it transforms the way we love and give to our spouse. We are never more like Christ than when we give selflessly.

That selfless part can be the challenge. Psalm 112:5-6 reminds us that a righteous person is generous, just, and leaves a lasting impact. True generosity in marriage isn’t just about what we give but how we give. Because of God’s kindness toward us, we can give selflessly, extravagantly, and unconditionally. We don’t give because we have to. We give because we get to!

What a legacy we can leave if we choose to be generous with all God has entrusted to us. It begins with how we bless our spouse, and the pattern continues in all relationships. How can you bless your spouse and others today through extravagant giving?
